This unique sounding preamp was originaly born in the 80s and used by artists like Tame Impala. Now it is coming back in a more pedalboard-friendly format ! Versatile and effective unit for guitar and bass
I've been using an early model of the Gazelle Tube Preamp for 6 months for my home studio project and been extremely impressed with the tones I have been able to dial in through my Vox AC-15. The clean channel adds some definite mojo and warmth to both guitar and bass. I've also been using the lead channel which can be used very lightly to add a bite to the guitar that helps it soar over the mix. I actually have used this most as a bass DI - every time I have A/B'd it on bass I have chosen to use the preamp and not looked back. I have never used an original KTG-1 unit, so can't comment on the closeness to tone, but can confirm it sounds superb.
Rodolphe is a fantastic guy as well, with great communication and an obvious passion for his hobby and product. I would certainly recommend the unit, and could really see myself getting another down the road. Thanks Rodolphe! Keen to see where Tampco goes next! All the best.
Amazing Clone Circuit
I own both the Seymour Duncan 84-40 and 84-50 (same circuit as the KTG, just run through amp components) and I can confirm the difference is nonexistent between the original and the clone. I’m completely blown away at the amazing attention to detail that went into the natural compression this board makes and how good the tube overdrive sounds.
This is the best guitar/bass preamp.
I bought my first unit of this preamp over a year ago. I was one of the first customers to buy this. I knew that the KTG-1 had a neat sound and came in a rack unit, but this just blows it away. In such a small form factor for a unit with this much tonal options, and under $500.... this is just remarkable. Throw anything with a line level output through this and you will be quite impressed. On the clean channel, it is my go to preamp. It has a way of making things sound so thick and warm, the EQs and boosts offer lots of options to stay clean and true to the source yet enhance it so nicely. I use this on everything including bass and keys. The lead channel is an absolute monster. I personally don't go to crazy on the gain, but with a little push from some pedals in front of it, it's insane that you can get such raw sounds out of a pedal.
This is just a few of my thoughts, I recently bought my second unit of this pedal. I don't think I could live without it. Rodolphe is such a craftsman and I can't thank him enough for this. Just buy it.
Came for Tame, Stayed for Tone
I bought this looking to recreate some tones from Tame Impala, and I'm really impressed. This pedal is crazy versatile. The EQ knobs are super dynamic, especially the bass, which when dropped all the gets you really nice, really crispy tones. Both the clean and lead channel sound great, and even better stacked with OD and fuzz. The three boosts available offer tons of ways to shape your gain in the pedal alone as well. (my personal favorite setting is lead channel, half gain, high treble and mids, low bass, and yellow boost) It could just be my ears, but there is a really subtle compression that this pedal offers, and it can really tie your sound, and modulation together at the end of a chain.
As far as I can tell, this is as close to a pure replica of the KTG-1 as I can find. It sound identical to the few I've gotten the chance to play. The way you put the rack unit in pedal form, and the construction and solder joints are immaculate. Even if you're not after Tame Impala tones, this pedal is a total workhorse, and I'll be keeping mine on my board for a long long time.

my ac30 sound muddy and boring without it
its really cool to play with the pedal, everything sounds a bit better and fresher, i use it with my AC30 oder D.I., and it sounds awesome. Best way to use for me it is as D.I. for bass, guitar and synths, with a dyna comp in front of it... thats a sound you can record right away great indie rock guitars
and rodolphe, the owner of tampco, is a really cool guy, so you get good support and can ask every technical questions you have :)
if you are looking for a nice preamp, buy this thing, its not cheap but you will not be disappointed! :)
